Pulling together our Senior Staff work as a Management Team to create a dynamic learning environment in which your child can blossom and thrive.

Principal

Mrs. Sylvia Greinig, BA Hons, PgDip
Mrs. Greinig is an educationalist who has devoted her life to creating successful learning environments for young children. In 1979 she became the second Principal of Abbey School, before which she taught in Yorkshire where for nine years she was Principal at the Garrison Prep School, Catterick. Her particular expertise is developing educational programmes for young children, having been a school principal now for 37 years. In the late 80's and early 90’s, Mrs. Greinig was a National Curriculum Moderator for Key Stages 1 and 2, and was an early years Ofsted Inspector between 1996 and 2002.

While studying at Exeter University with the psychologist, Teri-Anne Hornby, Mrs. Greinig became interested in the work of the world-renowned philosopher, Professor Matthew Lipman, and particularly in his concept of Philosophy For Children (P4C). Finally, 1996, she travelled to New Jersey, New York, USA, to study with him and his assistant, Professor Ann Margaret Sharp. Mrs. Greinig brought back cutting edge ideas she learned there and incorporated them into the educational programme presented at Abbey.

In addition to maintaining a repertoire of current educational thinking, Mrs. Greinig has many interests in the local business community. She is a member of the Institute of Directors, a Trustee of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, a Director of several charities and companies, including Torquay's Living Coasts, Paignton Zoological and Botanical Gardens, PZE Enterprises Limited and Newquay Zoo. She is also on the executive of the Babbacombe and St. Marychurch Traders Association. Mrs. Greinig has been a School Governor for four years at Torquay Girl’s Grammar School and for twelve years at St. Cuthbert Mayne School, the first joint Roman Catholic and Anglican secondary school in UK.

In her spare time, Mrs. Greinig, a trained singer, enjoys performing Opera, both in UK and abroad, walking, art and theatre, and is a long-standing 'Friend' of the Theatre Royal in Plymouth.

Head of Nursery

Mrs. Karen Hunt, NNEB.
Mrs. Hunt grew up Torbay where, whilst still in school, she decided on a career with children. Studying at Torquay Technical College qualified her as an NNEB, after which she took time out to visit Australia, returning to join Abbey School as a Nursery Nurse.

In her early years at Abbey School Mrs. Hunt worked both in the nursery and also helped Mrs. Greinig with her young family. From the start of her career Mrs. Hunt recognised the significance of the development of children during their earliest years of life and the importance of what happens in these years to what lies ahead. Now, with three children of her own, she understands even more the varying needs of individual children and how a stimulating environment expands the foundations on which all future growth depends.

Mrs. Hunt became Head of Nursery in July 2003 where she puts into practice all the skills, expertise and experience she has obtained during her career at Abbey School and whilst bringing up her own children. She was especially delighted to receive a long service certificate earned while at Abbey School, and presented by HRH The Duchess of Gloucester GCVO during her visit to Abbey School in September 2003.

In her spare time Mrs. Hunt enjoys family pursuits and quality time with her husband and three young children.
