Starting School - Reception Class
Foundation Level

School Life starts in the September of the academic year in which your child becomes five, when children transfer from the Nursery into the Reception class. Here, using a statutory baseline assessment, experts in Reception Teaching assess children within the first seven weeks of schooling. Abbey School provides an appropriate learning and play environment to ensure a successful and productive first year in school.

Gaining Confidence - Years 1 and 2
Key Stage 1

The success of the Reception year is built on in Years 1 and 2, by teachers who specialise in this age group and understand how to get the best from infant children. Each month sees incremental progress being achieved, and there is a six-monthly review at which teachers, together with you, formulate appropriate goals to work towards during the coming six months. By the end of year 2, your child will be developing self-confidence, social skills and making sound academic progress. Year 2 children are thoroughly prepared for the national SAT assessments at Key Stage 1, which they take during the course of their normal school curriculum in the Summer Term of their seventh year.

Describing what our Infants achieve cannot give you a true reflection of what we do. Please make an appointment to visit us, and let us show you our remarkable achievements first hand! For more details click the Infant page.  For further information on any aspect of Abbey School, follow This Link or telephone 01803-327868.

Towards Independent Learning - Years 3, 4, 5, and 6
Key Stage 2

Work at Key Stage 2 level lasts for four years, during which children gradually start to develop independent learning, in readiness for secondary school. At Abbey School, each year provides a tried and tested specialist curriculum designed to guide children painlessly through the rapid development of these years, in which there is dramatic educational, physical, emotional and social progress. A full range of National Curriculum subjects is offered, enhanced by many additional activities.

Throughout these years, teachers work closely with parents, ensuring that regular targets and goals are achieved, and that children enjoy the learning process both in school and out. After all, life is not solely academic and your child may excel in many other areas.

We encourage you to work with us to ensure that your child achieves across each area of their individual and personal development spectrum. Not all children will be ballerinas, Einstein's, chess masters, business tycoons, academics or football stars, but with educational specialists in Abbey School to guide the way and you to make the difference, together we will provide the support and opportunities that your child needs in order to achieve optimally as they mature and grow.

Confidence Leads to Success
In amongst all of this, we must never forget that we are here for the children, and children adore success. At Abbey, we aim to ensure that children succeed in all areas of their development so they can revel in a sense of achievement. When you feel good about yourself, it makes a difference to your confidence and self-worth, and we spend a great deal of our efforts ensuring that Abbey children feel good about themselves! This positive approach repays itself hugely, when we reap the rewards of our older children achieving beyond expectation in all fields. Abbey children are successful and your child can become part of this success.

Childhood passes all too soon, so let us make the best of it. Visit us and we will show you what we have done in the past, what we are doing now, and what we will be offering in the future. For more details on our Junior education, click this Junior page link.  For further information on any aspect of Abbey School, send an email by following This Link or telephone 01803-327868.
