Independent Schools Inspectorate Report

Change of Inspection Authority

Until just over a year ago our inspection authority used to be OFSTED. We then joined the IAPS (the Independent Preparatory Schools Association) and fell under the remit of ISI (the Independent Schools Inspectorate).

Ofsted do not publish the results of independent prep schools, but ISI do, and we have discovered that our Key Stage 2 (Year 6) SATs results from 2016 have catapulted us directly into the Top 100 Preparatory Schools in England, at position 64, as published in the Sunday Times of 19th November 2017.

This includes all preparatory school and all junior departments of Public School that sit SATS.

Come and visit us and see for yourselves the wonderful facilities and excellent teaching that support this remarkable fete!

Message from the Head Teacher – February 2018

Our first ISI inspection results are in and we are delighted!

In November 2017 we were visited by two compliance inspectors from ISI who spent two days with us, looking at policies and procedures in the main, as this was a compliance inspection, but of course, checking in on all aspects of the school to ensure we are up to muster!

The inspectors discovered what we have always know, that the quality of education is above average and reported in ISI compliance speak, that is ‘good’, that children are happy, delightful, well-behaved, work hard and achieve well.

We were told that the teachers have a very strong curricular base and support the children’s learning. We also discovered that Abbey School had the least number of negative responses on the pupil and parent questionnaire of any school the inspection team had experienced in 15 years of inspection – 98% positive, which tallies exactly with our own survey conducted only a few weeks prior to the inspection earlier in the term.

Thank you so very much for your amazing support. It is greatly appreciated.

We have previously been inspected under OFSTED and for many years our policies and procedures have always been deemed outstanding. It came as a bit of a shock to discover that the ISI inspection team made recommendations for administrative improvements to two of our health and safety procedures and one admin system that were not ‘met’ under their compliance requirements. It has been two months since our inspection and all of the recommendations have been or are being, addressed. We have also requested another compliance inspection in short order as we certainly don’t want to wait three years to be re-inspected when we know these areas are now up to scratch. Because we are new to ISI we have been informed that this may be considered – we hope so!

I have to reiterate that we were disappointed to be deemed non-compliant with these three items, but not overwhelmed. Knowing that some of the differences were due to format and that much was corrected within minutes of it being pointed out, I found somewhat galling. Onwards and upwards!

Now we know what is expected from a compliance inspection we are working to make certain that in the future we will always meet the very high expectations and interpretations of ISI.

The Head Teacher would be pleased to discuss the findings of the Inspection report with all current and prospective Abbey parents and she may be contacted on admin@abbeyschool.co.uk
